Tips
๐ฑ๏ธ A mouse is much more comfortable than a laptop built-in trackpad.
๐ A mouse with a DPI button, or with adjustable DPI through an app, will have much better speed and smoothness in Zenned.
๐ฅ The most ergonomic mouse shape has no curves that make the middle right section thinner (very important), a lenght which only rests the upper side of the palm, keeps the small finger relaxed, and has only a subtle inclination towards the right side.
๐ป Towers are cheaper, laptops are portable. Portability usually matters.
๐ Laptop screen size affects the health of your eyes. Aim for at least 15 inches.
๐ผ If you are not buying a first hand high quality laptop, it’s better to get a second hand enterprise grade. They are drastically more durable, and cheaper. Consumer grade laptops are brittle.
๐ง If you want a first hand laptop, considering buying a high quality one specially designed to work with Linux.
๐ฎ If you want to use the computer for gaming, check the system requirements of the games. Generally you want something that doubles that.
๐น๏ธ AMD GPUs are better for gaming on towers, NVIDIA GPUs on laptops.
๐พ Most slow old computers can be turned fast just by substituting their storage with a fast one, which is usually cheap. Thermal performance can be highly improved by substituting thermal paste. Computer case cracks can be repaired with Sugru, and scratches can be covered with specialized stickers.
โ๏ธ Generally the best hardware is that with the best performance which price doesn’t increase too much for marginal gains. Aka check the difference between bencharks versus price.
๐จ The build quality of the materials matter, specially on laptops. Enterprise grade computers have drastically better materials. Basic cases from reputable brands are usually better than more advanced ones from not so good brands.
๐ The quality of a laptop or motherboard depends a lot on its UEFI. Bugs in them are common, and they frequently behave in odd ways and cause crashes. If possible check that the UEFI is intuitive to navigate, easy to upgrade from the UEFI menu itself, and that the manufacturer provides up to date fixes.
๐งด Peripherals also matter. Price doesn’t say much about their quality, brand does. When buying get multiple models, and test them for real.
๐ Apple computers are problematic, except if you plan to use them with MacOS only. But MacOS usually starts to work slow after a few years.
